The MULLINS MEMORIAL FUND supports people living in the parish of Wadhurst.
The help provided is usually practical, but may occasionally come in some different
form in order to make someone’s life easier. Perhaps you are the person who
could do with help or you know someone else who would benefit from our support.
This is a small local charity able to continue working thanks to the generosity
of others and our own fund-raising efforts. Contact one of the Office Bearers

Be assured that whatever we do is done in complete confidentiality.
The next major fund-raising activity is the Farmers Market on Friday 24th October
from 8.30 am on the forecourt of the Commemoration Hall Any contributions
to the market of home-made or home-grown products would be gratefully received
so that we can have enough funds to be able to respond immediately to someone’s
call for help. Also, please put the date in your diary so that you can come
and buy and have warming refreshments. That is followed by the ever-popular,
sometimes maddening annual Christmas Quiz published on 1st December. Your
support of these two initiatives would be gratefully accepted.
WADHURST TWINNING ASSOCIATION
The Association is planning various evenings of entertainment during the year
especially the Winter Social on Saturday 10th January 2009 in the Youth Centre.

WADHURST HISTORY SOCIETY holds its next talk on Thursday 9th October, 7.30 for 8pm in the Commemoration Hall. Robin Hodgkinson and Trisha McLaughlin have entitled their talk The Roman Administration of the Wealden Iron Industry. The meeting which follows on Wednesday 12th November, will have as the speaker, Heather Woodward, talking about Scotney – a Work of Art and Nature. Visitors are always welcome for a small donation.
At that November meeting, it is hoped that we shall be able to unveil and sell the latest publication of the History Society WADHURST IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR – life in a Wealden town. A great deal of research and hard work has gone into the creation of this series of articles about our history, written by a number of local authors. Whilst it cannot possibly be a definitive version of everything that happened in Wadhurst during the War years, it will certainly give a broad-ranging overview of life in a crucial period of our history.
The next focus of attention for the Society will be Wadhurst in the 1950s and 1960s. That community changed greatly immediately after the war as we are all very well aware but then there came the local, national and international upheavals of the 1960s which must have had an impact upon the population of Wadhurst. Buildings and land were lost as development impinged upon Wadhurst; the population changed as jobs and businesses disappeared. It is important to track those changes and their implications on our community so that future generations can understand when, how and why they happened.
Memories can be summarised by chatting to someone, or you can write them
down, or they can be recorded and transcribed. The important thing is for
us to hear them and what a lot the future generations will learn and understand.

WADHURST WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
A well attended meeting last month enjoyed a very entertaining talk by our
guest speaker, Mrs Ann Chance. If laughter is the best medicine, members
went home feeling very much better after hearing her talk ‘Saddle sore in
Montana’ than when they arrived. Mrs Chance described for us how she fulfilled
a life-long ambition to become a wrangler when she took part in a cattle
drive in Montana. Already a Senior Citizen, she took an intensive riding
course before setting off on her adventure. Her descriptions of camp life
in all its aspects, the pleasures and privations, were fascinating and delivered
with humour and wit. Next month’s meeting will be devoted to our AGM. Trading

WADHURST DRAMATIC CLUB
‘DEATHTRAP’ BY IRA LEVIN
23rd, 24th, 25th October

Sidney Bruhl is a thriller playwright, without a single success to his credit
for some years. Out of the blue, an unknown dramatist - Clifford Anderson -
sends him a new thriller entitled ‘Deathtrap’ asking for his professional opinion.
Sidney is so bowled over by the play that he plots with the (reluctant) assistance
of Myra, his wife, about how best to plagiarise ‘Deathtrap’. When Clifford
is invited to call and subsequently turns up at Sidney and Myra’s isolated
New England home, events take a sinister turn… Two particularly gruesome murders
ensue, - or do they? - leading to a third death by a fatal heart attack. Even
so, Sidney seems confident of being able to keep control of things, until,
that is a Dutch clairvoyant, Helga ten Dorp, starts experiencing disquieting
vibrations which make Sidney’s plans take a wholly unexpected twist…
Afraid we can’t give away any more than this, folks! But all will be revealed
if you’d care to buy a ticket for any of the 3 performances (£8 floor seating/
£9 tiered seating). Tickets will be on sale at Newington’s Newsagents, High
St, Wadhurst from MONDAY 6TH OCTOBER. But be sure to get your tickets as soon
as possible - this play looks like being a best—seller. (PS please DON’T spoil
things by telling anyone how this thriller ends!)

THE ROTARY CLUB OF WADHURST
Meet 8.00pm every Wednesday at ‘The Greyhound’
Apart from the regular weekly meetings of which more anon the month’s major
event is the Jumble Sale to be held in the Commemoration Hall on Saturday 18th
October starting at 9.30am. All monies raised going towards the Worldwide Eradication
of Polio. This is an ideal opportunity to clear out lofts, garages, spare rooms
etc and at the same time contribute to a really worthwhile cause. To donate
jumble contact David Goldsmith 01892 783264 or Brian Tuck 01892 785285. Collections
can be arranged or alternatively deliver all offerings to the Commemoration
Hall from 5.30pm onwards on Friday 17th October. In addition to the Jumble
there will be a cake stall and a grand raffle.
A number of varied events are scheduled for October with Tim Wates talking
on ‘Serving in Iraq and Afghanistan’ (15th), Ann Scott extolling the virtues
of ‘The University of the Third Age’ (22nd) and Brian Portway from ‘The Jubilee
Sailing Trust’ coming on the 29th to receive a cheque for £1,500 and to talk
on the trusts work. (The JST, www.jst.org.uk, was one of the three local charities
to benefit from monies raised at the annual ‘Scarecrows’ festival)
On a less cerebral note the club is taking advantage of one of its member’s
passion for rugby and his support of London Irish in particular, to arrange
a visit on 1st October to the Madejski Stadium in Reading to see the match
v Sale Sharks.
For the more energetic members Neil Rose is organising this month’s pubocentric
perambulation from the ‘Rose and Crown’ at Burwash on Sunday 26th October.
Finally in the September issue of ‘Focus’ we reported that a total of £6,200
had been raised at the 2008 Scarecrow Festival. Fortunately this proved to
be a very conservative estimate and after all of the barrels had been scraped
and the last few pennies counted the final amount will be close to £6,500.

WADHURST & DISTRICT ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY
Meetings 3rd Wednesday every month begin at 7.30pm although members are invited
to arrive any time after 7.00pm. This is a good time to exchange ideas and
discuss problems. The venue as always is in the Upper Room of the Methodist
Church at the east end of Wadhurst Lower High Street, opposite Uplands College.

WADHURST & TICEHURST BRANCH, ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
The Annual Poppy Appeal Brass Band Concert - Commemoration Hall
Saturday 11 October at 8pm. Cost £5
Wadhurst & Tidebrook Branch of the Royal British Legion are delighted that
the Wadhurst Brass Band have, once again, agreed to entertain us. The proceeds
will go to the Poppy Appeal. Please join us for what, we are sure, will be
another thoroughly enjoyable evening. Tickets will be on sale from Newingtons
from the end of September.

Summer Show - Over £850.00 will go to the Royal British Legion 2008 Poppy Appeal after two very successful performances of A Clown's Story" performed during July at The Mount and at Uplands Community College . Gifting their act free to the Appeal, Arthur V Pedlar accompanied by Alan Whiteley on the piano gave a facinating account of the development of silent clowning followed by a hilarious act demonstrating great skill on his unicycle and making music from a collection of rare circus instuments including a six inch violin!A very generous donation from Uplands towards expenses and free use of The Mount is much appreciated.

After our August break September has seen us back into the swing of things with
concerts at Eastbourne, Sevenoaks, and the Pantiles. Eastbourne was a bit chilly
but the second weekend of the month turned out to be sunny which always makes
life on the bandstand that much more enjoyable. We have been featuring a number
of soloists at these events – some, like Tim Fermor on tuba, and Algy Hoare
on Euphonium are old hands, but it has been especially good to see two of our
younger members making their debuts and living up to these high standards.
Well done David Healy (bass trombone) and Christabel Seall (flugel horn), two
young players with very bright futures.
As you can see we have three major concerts coming up. We are especially pleased to be appearing at a brand new venue this year – Frant Memorial Hall on 21st November. This will help us to spread the brass band gospel to an even wider audience.
Players Wanted
We are always on the lookout for additional players to join Ken’s Merry Men/Women.
At the moment we particularly need cornet players to help out on our front
row, so if you like playing the tune please get in touch with Jenny on her
phone number below. Maybe there are some trumpet players out there who want
to try it, we have instruments available.
Learn to Play
Our Training Band meets at 7pm on Thursdays and we would be really pleased
to see you if you fancy giving it a go. They are an enthusiastic bunch of
all ages so don’t be shy. Again we have instruments for you to use so there
really is no excuse.
