'The Incredible Journey of the Box of Delights' or From the Vienna Woods to a Cambridge College via the Ashdown Forest.

Crowborough Arts presents the incredible story of a box inherited by local Doctor, Philip Marriot, and given to him on the death of his adoptive father. The most striking object of his inheritance is the box itself or Kassette which contains 88 birthday greetings from friends of David Bach on the occasion of his 50th birthday in 1924.David Bach was an enterprising impresario with strong political views which encouraged him to promote concerts and artistic productions for the masses at discounted prices. Come 1939 and being Jewish, David Bach and his family emigrated to London bringing with him a library of over 3,000 books.
How Dr Marriot becomes a part of this story is included in the series of illustrated lectures given by local musician, Jared Armstrong, who has spent countless hours researching the history of the Kassette and its contents. Fascinatingly this has become the history of a wide artistically, musically, historically and socially complex web relating largely to the period up to 1945 both in Europe and also closer to home.
The lectures are all in the Church Hall at the rear of St Mary's Catholic Church in Queen's Road, Crowborough starting on Friday 24th February and continuing on 9th and 16th March. Tickets are priced at £7 (or £20 for all three events) for members of Crowborough Arts or £8.50 (or £22 for all three events) for non-members.
Tickets and further information is available on 01892 664 534 or from J & K Galleries, Croft Road, Crowborough
