Colin Hill e-mailed: I am particularly interested in the Newington's of Wadhurst & Ticehurst as my late grandmother's family line originates here. My great great great grandfather was Joseph Owen Newington who was a watch and clock maker born in Wadhurst in 1843. He married Mary Fisher.
Joseph Owen's son Owen continued the family business and moved to Worthing where my family are now mainly based. It would be of great interest to learn more about their watch and clock making business/trade in Wadhurst although I suspect they did more repairing and selling than actual making. I can find no record of watches or clocks bearing the name Newington.
Joseph Owen's father was Samuel Newington (1775/6-1836) who married Elizabeth Basset (b1775) on 17/11/1796 in Wadhurst. I believe he had a brother called Joel who was a miller and who married Mary Noakes. Samuel was a carpenter & joiner who ran a business and possibly a shop in Sparrows Green. I have a copy of his will dated 1836 which gives details of his children etc. He appears to have been reasonably well-off.
It would be interesting to learn more about his work. And also about Samuel's father who I believe to be Joseph Newington, also possibly a miller of Ticehurst and who married Mary Young. As mentioned before, he may of had another son by the name of Joel but that is all I know about him.
Any information about Joseph Newington and Mary Young would be of great help, especially their children, parents, grandparents etc

Lisa de Garston is researching her family history. Great Great Grandmother was Maria Akehurst (born 1883 in Frant), the daughter of James & Mary Akehurst (nee Rabbitt) who lived at Rushlye Cottages, Frant. Maria had 11 siblings, Sarah Ann, Kate, Rose, James, Alice, Ernest, Charles, Sidney Edward, John, Julia, and finally Thomas. Maria married William Rogers in 1877 at St Albans. Maria and William moved out of Frant and had four children, Emma, Thomas, Alice (my Great Grandmother) and William. In1891 Maria and her family were living in Hever and her two brothers, Charles, a gamekeeper and Sidney lodged with them. Maria and William then moved to Tunbridge Wells to Spencer Mews and later Varney Street.

Pat Gerber (née Relf)in Switzerland writes: Just wanted to say hello from Switzerland. Have been doing some family research since beginning of this year and found that my great great grandfather was born in Ticehurst (Jason Baldock) As most families of that time (around 1850-60) he had many brothers and sisters who also founded large families (Jason had around 13 children). Jason moved on to Etchingham, married a girl from Burwash (daughter of a certain Reuben Edwards - also a large family) and eventually landed in Sissinghurst. The whole male part of the family seem to have been farm labourers. Most of Mr Luff's children worked on the railways.. from labourer to Station-Master at London Bridge/Eastbourne. Who remembers Miss Bridger & Miss Bennett of Ingoldsby Villas..? the Hansfords at the Best Beech..? and Dawn of the Rock Robin..? Eaton Brothers garage..? Gallops at the forge..? As a child I loved fishing at The Mount.. with Tim Hansford. During steam-days.. I spent many days watching "Schools Class" locomotives arrive & leave Wadhurst. The too-narrow tunnel. The days of large families..! My father (James Frederick Cannon 1903-1984) was raised in Tunbridge Wells.. and, I believe, played football for Tunbridge Wells before moving to Coventry in 1933. James had a sister (Edith) who never married and devoted her live to nursing.. and William (who moved to London). Although I was born in Coventry.. many years ago I found my way back to Sussex. She was the daughter of Alfred Baker Playsted, born in Wadhurst in 1808. She emigrated to New South Wales sometime after the birth of her son (in 1869) and the subsequent death (date unknown) of her first Husband Alfred Share, and subsequently (in 1888) remarried a John Simpson. She died in Sydney in 1902. Alfred Baker Playsted's younger brother Alfred George Playsted emigrated to New Zealand in 1851 with his three young daughters: numerous of their descendants live there today.
Alfred Baker and Alfred George Playsted were sons of William Alfred Playsted (born 1783 in Wadhurst) and Mary Ann Baker (born 1791), who were married in Wadhurst in December 1806."

is researching her mother's family. Her father Henry Playsted Read died in 1931 when she was only 4. Apparently his family came from Wadhurst (or area)and were relatives of the Drews who may have windows commemorating them in the church. Henry had a sister, Lillian Read and on his marriage certificate, his father, Richard Read gives his occupation as a licensed victualler. At some time they seem to have lived in a house named "Buttons". She would very much like to hear from anyone who could throw light on any of the above.

David Allberry by email is trying to find out if a preparatory school he was sent to in the early 1950s still exists (the building, not of course the school - that would have closed long ago). He remembers at the age of 7 or 8 getting to Wadhurst Station and then being taken with other boys by road to the place. It cannot have been far from Wadhurst. It was called Whispers and was run, he thinks, by an ex-Naval type and his wife. It was sometimes confused with another school of the same or nearly the same name, but that was a girls' school. The school only had 40 pupils and was of course a boarding school, so it would have been quite a big house. It was in the country, had a 100 yard (at least) drive, squash and fives courts etc. Can anyone help?

Update: A small booklet "The Schools of East Sussex" - unfortunately of unspecified date - includes, under the heading 'boarding and day schools', this entry:
Whispers, Wadhurst. Boys 5-10 years.

An internet search on 'Whispers' and 'Wadhurst' reveals a website about a Father Boniface Hunt, who "worked at C.G. Teale's prep school at Whispers, Wadhurst, Sussex" - but it doesn't say when, or indeed anything else about the school. But at least it gives us the name Teale. Following that lead the telephone directories of February 1950 and May 1954 have entries for: Teale, G C R. Whispers. Wadhurst 220 There is no such entry in the next directory, dated June 1956. Does any of this ring a bell?

Rob Nicklin in Staffordhire [contact by e-mail] wonders if any Wadhurst local historians were aware of a distinguished son of Wadhurst who gave his life in the 1st World War by the name of Lt Col. Frank H Walker, who was born in Wadhurst around 1871 & resided with family & staff at something called "Bir[c]khurst Lodge" (or something very similar). Lt Col Walker was the commanding officer of the 7th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment in Gallipoli & was tragically killed during furious fighting with the Turks on the last night of withdrawal from the peninsula - 7th January 1916. At the time of his death I believe that he (and his family) had moved to a farm near Horsham, Sussex but nonetheless it would appear that he was Wadhurst born & bred at least for the first 10 years of his life (certainly up to the 1881 census).
