I’ve lived in Wadhurst for eight years (my family roots are in East Sussex) and in that time have been actively involved in the community. I’m a parent with children at both Uplands and Wadhurst Primary (where I’m a parent-governor) and have a range of interests from Twinning (schools’ liaison) to Transition. I work part-time for Creative Partnerships (at Sussex University’s Centre for Community Engagement) managing projects which involve partnerships between schools and artists/engineers/musicians/writers, encouraging young people to be creative and innovative. Previously I worked for the BBC for over 20 years as a radio producer, latterly for World Service. I am both independent and reflect the broader Wadhurst perspective.

I'm passionate about safeguarding the best of Wadhurst whilst improving areas of weakness:

  1. Local shops: there has been talk of a supermarket in the centre of Wadhurst - as a parish councillor I would fight any such move with a concerted campaign. I think it is vital that our local shops are preserved: we are exceptionally fortunate in having such a vibrant centre and cannot afford to lose it.
  2. Improved transport links - as a commuter who uses public transport whenever possible, I am fully aware of the level of service we endure! I would seek ways to improve local transport services in Wadhurst as well as exploring possibilities for community transport and expanding safe cycling routes.
  3. Safer roads: I campaigned successfully for the installation of the Speed Indicator Device on Cousley Wood Road and would lobby for reduced speed limits in the vicinities of our schools.
  4. Better leisure facilities and opportunities for young people:  I would pledge to revisit the swimming pool initiative, to encourage increased cultural opportunities  and seek ways of securing more more local employment for young people.
  5. Planning and local housing: I am firmly against garden-grabbing and insensitive development in Wadhurst whilst aware that there is an acute housing need for local people. I would seek to consult widely in the community to reach agreement on how best to meet this need.
  6. Environment: we live in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - I would seek to protect our countryside.

The Localism Bill currently going through Parliament will ensure that local communities have a real say in local planning and other issues. If elected, I would aim for a fresh consultative approach, seeking more local input on planning and environment issues through innovative and participative ways - such as an Open Space event. I would also seek to involve more young people in decision-making processes.
